It all began on February 12, 2016. I was at work and I received a phone call from my mom saying that my dad had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. Immediately, I felt helpless. I asked my Director once I finished my call if I could take a week off to see about my father. She granted me permission. While I was away, I called every doctor and nurse manager on each floor and procedural area he was in. They obliged and answered all of my questions and made sure to give my dad the best care (I can be pretty fierce when it comes to my loved ones' health.)

When I finally reached him, he was recovering at home nicely. I had made up my mind that I had to intervene. I told my dad we were going to learn some things and I was going to break it up into a two part session. Within the first session, I taught him the heart anatomy and circulatory system; explained his diagnosis; and what that meant for him. Part two included: explanation of medications and why he had to take them at certain times; potential smoking consequences (yes, there are more consequences than lung cancer); if there was a desire to quit; and if so, how we could fit that into his life presently.

After those sessions, it was if a light switch had turned on inside my dad. I knew then, this was my calling, but I didn't act yet. Then one year later, my mom received a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Overwhelmed, she wondered how this would fit into her way of life. I proceeded to do the same education and guidance with my mother that I had completed with my father.  Subsequently, the idea of JoyED was born.

There are so may more people like my dad and mom who needed education, coaching, and patience. Someone to help navigate the medical waters as they steer the ship. In essence, that's what JoyED does. JoyED helps you fit your new (or old) diagnosis into your life. JoyED empowers you with knowledge, and helps you recognize the most meaningful lifestyle change to you so that you can LIVE your optimal level of perceived health and maintained wellness.
